Prayer Doodling

A few years ago, I was introduced to prayer doodling. The purpose of doodling while praying is to enhance focus and mindfulness in your prayers. Use simple materials like paper and colored pens or pencils. You can use any piece of paper or a sketch pad. It doesn’t need to be fancy. I like to use a journal so I can keep them all together in one place. I put the date on the page and leave a space for comments, verses that come to mind, and how God is speaking to me.

It is best to set aside a quiet space free from distractions. But you can do it anywhere and at any time. Begin by writing down the name or thing that you want to pray for. As you are thinking about the person, even yourself, or the situation you want to pray for, loosely draw or place a shape around the name. It could be a heart, flowers, a circle, or a square. You can even make the words look 3D. You don’t have to be an artist. Make it simple or detailed. The purpose is to pray for whatever you wrote down.

My mind always seems to be going, so I pray the whole time I’m doodling. You can stop doodling and prayerfully place your hand on the name or situation you drew, and give it to God. Often, God brings a name to mind, but I don’t know why. I simply ask Jesus to make His presence known to them, to wrap them in His loving arms, strengthen them, heal them, and provide what they need in that moment.

May prayer doodling become a way for you to connect to God on a deeper level and be an instrument for you to use to bring you peace in your daily battles.

“Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you.” – Jeremiah 29:12 (NKJV)
